Slim Jim Memories

In the late 1950s to the mid 1960s, my grandfather ran a bar. It was called St. Elmos, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. My father used to help him with bartending after getting home from his regular job. The patrons liked my father and would often want to buy him a drink. Of course, he refused, but he would say he'd take a Slim Jim instead. So we always had a good supply of them to enjoy.

In the mid 1960s, the Morning Call, Allentown's morning newspaper, wanted to expand. They bought the entire block where the bar was located, tore down everything and built a big, new building to produce the newspaper. Unfortunately, that was the end of the Slim Jims.
